Cannabis and Tea

Tea and cannabis are described in the same words: citrus, floral, earthy, pine. That shared vocabulary is the whole basis of a pairing. Choose a cup whose aroma echoes the strain's, or one that contrasts with it, the way a cook pairs one flavor with another.

Start from the lab panel

A product's certificate of analysis lists its terpenes, the aroma compounds our terpene article describes. The one or two with the largest amounts tell you which aroma to pair.

Pairing by aroma

Citrus, from limonene: a citrus-scented cup such as Earl Grey or a lemon herbal.

Floral, from linalool: lavender, or a jasmine tea.

Pine, from pinene: lapsang souchong, a black tea smoked over pine.

Earthy and musky, from myrcene: an aged pu-erh.

To contrast rather than echo, try a citrus cup beside an earthy strain.

What a pairing is not

A pairing is about flavor, nothing more. We make no claim that any tea changes how cannabis feels, and this page is about the cup beside you.

Infused teas and drinks

A cannabis-infused drink is a different thing: it contains THC and is labeled in milligrams like an edible, and the notice Nevada requires dispensaries to give buyers applies to it. Our edibles article quotes that notice in full.
