Tinctures: The Bottle, the Dropper, the Label

A tincture is cannabis extract in liquid form, carried in alcohol or oil and sold in a small bottle with a marked dropper. Like an edible, it is labeled in milligrams rather than as a percentage.

Reading the bottle

Nevada requires the label to state the product's THC in milligrams. Many bottles also carry a second cannabinoid, given as a ratio: 1:1 THC to CBN means equal amounts of each, and 1:20 THC to CBD means twenty times as much CBD as THC. A ratio describes the chemistry, not an effect.

No strain on the label

Most tinctures are made from an extract that carries no single strain's identity, so you choose one by what its label says it contains rather than by strain name.

A bottle holds a lot

Nevada allows up to 800 milligrams of THC in a tincture, eight times what an edible package may hold. Measure with the dropper rather than pouring.

Taken by mouth

Some tinctures are made to be held under the tongue and others to be swallowed or added to a drink. Either way a tincture is taken by mouth, and the notice Nevada requires dispensaries to give buyers applies. It reads: "The intoxicating effects of cannabis may be delayed by 2 hours or more and users of cannabis products should initially ingest a small amount of the product containing no more than 10 milligrams of THC, then wait at least 2 hours before ingesting any additional amount of cannabis."

Keeping it

Close it after every use and keep it upright, away from heat and light.
